The atmosphere builds throughout the day and the inns prepare by removing the furniture in readiness for the evenings festivities. The first of two firework displays is held early in the evening, with the children in mind. The streets begin to fill with costume clad revellers, shop bought or home made, it doesn't matter the taking part is more important. The crowd centres around the junction of Fore Street, Higher Market Street and Buller Street, usually entertained by the "wheelie bin" disco. Just before midnight the crowd moves towards the promenade ready for the count down and the main firework display to welcome in The New Year.
